Fort Sumter National Monument, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina
The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, a Federal fort in Charleston Harbor, on April 12, 1861.
The fort surrendered 34 hours later. Access to Fort Sumter is available through a concession-operated ferry that departs from the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square and Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. Georgetown, South Carolina
