The Windows on Main Street: Sharon Lund

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 9:01 pm
November 30, 2008

This time on Main Street, we look to another one of Walt’s children: Sharon Lund-his only daughter. Bear with me as there is not much information on the internet about the Lunds. They’ve stayed, for the most part, out of the public eye.

On December 21, 1936 (the winter solstice), Sharon Mae was born. To whom, no one really knows (the Disney’s tried to keep it a secret from the press), but she was adopted by Walter and Lillian Disney in January of 1937 (because Lillian had several miscarriages before and after Diane Disney’s birth, they decided to adopt). The only people who knew of Sharon’s origins were family and friends as Walt and Lillian didn’t want her to be treated differently from Diane by the outside world.

When Sharon was 22 years old, she married Robert Borgfeldt Brown and had one daughter with him (Victoria Brown). When Brown died on September 14, 1967 (from lung cancer), Disney spent a few years mourning his death before marrying William S. Lund and having two children with him (Brad and Michelle Lund). Sharon died on February 16, 1993 from lung cancer. After her death, $11 million dollars from her trust were donated to the California School of Performing Arts which created the Sharon D. Lund School of Dance.

At age 36, Victoria died from health complications. Her trust continues to give back throug the Victoria Lund Foundation which donates to the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine’s Healthy Kids program at Arthur M. Hamilton Elementary School, the Boys and Girls Club of Phoenix and The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

After his wife died, William has spent his time occupied with his company (W.S.L. Associates) where he works as a construction consultant (he also served as President of CalArts from 1972-1975 after being hired as a consultant for the Florida Project).

P.S. If anyone has a picture of this window, please let me know.

Ice skating in Central Florida

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 1:12 pm

Yup, I said ice skating in Central Florida. It is right on the Indian River in Historic Cocoa Village, in a tent with with a floor of ice. According to my source it only costs $7 (not sure if this is for all ages, or just for adults)! Skating on a river? Sounds like fun to me.

For additional information about this temporary ice rink click here. I might not personally get to make it over to Cocoa to enjoy this event, but if anyone else does please feel free to share your feelings here!

Thanks to @eringoesgreen (http://pulseofcentralflorida.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/people-pulse-erin-goes-green/) for sharing this.

Party with The B-52’s!

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 11:48 am

Music is an acquired taste, so to say the same thing about living legends The B-52’s is probably a big understatement. Fortunately for me, I acquired a taste for their music a long, long time ago; I was addicted after the release of “Cosmic Thing.” I’ve seen them perform multiple times and can honestly say they’re one of the greatest live bands I’ve experienced. And I’ll have the chance to see them one more time when they hit the House of Blues Orlando next February.

While it’s a bit of a drive out to the House of Blues, it’s a fantastic venue to see artists perform — there’s a great view of the stage from anywhere. Plus, if you’re into grabbing a drink or two at a show, the House of Blues has plenty of bars so there’s never too long of a wait.

Don’t remember The B-52’s too well?

Then:

Now:

Will I see there in February? You can purchase tickets here. But if you’re not up for paying to go to the show you can always enter to win two (2) free tickets over at Mix105.com.

The Windows on Main Street: Roy E. Disney

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 9:52 am

Time for Roy Oliver Disney’s only son: Roy Edward Disney.  We find his window along Main Street:

Sailmaker – Sailing Lessons
Patty Disney, First Mate

Timothy
Roy Patrick
Abigail

Roy Edward Disney was born to Roy Oliver Disney and Edna Francis Disney in Los Angeles on January 10, 1930 (and is their sole child). As a child, he traveled to the Studio where he viewed the films the animators were working on (i.e. “Snow White”, “Pinocchio”) and acted as a sounging board to his father’s (and his uncle’s) workers. He graduated in 1951 from Pomona College with a Bachelor’s degree in English. Once out of college, he returned to the entertainment industry as an assistant film director on “Dragnet” before returning to the Walt Disney Studios in 1954.

Once back at the Studios, he worked on “The Living Desert” and “The Vanishing Prarie” (two True-Life Adventure films that won Academy Awards) as an assistant editor. He continued writing and working on television series like “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” as well as “Zorro”.

He formed his own production unit in 1964 to write, produce, and direct other television and theatrical productions (i.e. “Varda, the Peregrine Falcon”, “Mustang!”, “The Owl That Didn’t Give a Hoot”) before joining the Company’s Board of Directors in 1967.

He left the company in 1977 (after 23 years with the Studios) to become an independent producer/investor because he didn’t agree with the direction of the company. However, he still retained his seat on the board of directors.

In 1984, Roy used his swagger on the Board to oust his cousin’s husband (Ron Miller) and brought in Michael Eisner as CEO and Frank Wells as COO. In this same year, he became the Vice Chairman and head of the animation department (where he oversaw “The Little Mermaid”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Lion King”, and most of the Golden Age films). His favorite movie ever to oversee was Fantasia 2000-the long awaited sequel to his uncle’s Fantasia.

While Disney was head of animation, his department was extremely successful. He also had enormous power over most of his colleagues (even Eisner) which allowed his department to have some artistic freedom.

Towards the end of Eisner’s reign, Disney’s influence started to wane as Eisner appointed high posts to “Suits” that were more loyal to him, not the Disney family. On November 30, 2003, Disney resigned from the company (after the board of directors rejected his request for an extenstion of his term as a board member) based on differences of opinion about the management style and direction within the company.

After his resignation, Disney continued to actively work on forcing out Eisner as CEO (he and Stanley Gold created SaveDisney.com). In 2004, 43% of Disney shareholders voted to oppose the re-election of Eisner to the corporate board of directors, but he retained the CEO title (much to Disney and Gold’s dismay). As criticism against him increased (especially for being dissatisfied with PIXAR), Eisner annouced his resignation from the company on September 30, 2005.

To this day, Eisner still holds 1.7% of Disney stock (2nd largest owner) while Roy Disney holds 1% (the 3rd largest owner).

Roy Disney and Stanley Gold have become the Chair and CEO (respectively) of Shamrock Holdings which manages Disney’s personal investments. Disney is also a well known sailor (he set the monohull time record from Los Angeles to Honolulu with 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes, 27 seconds) and produced the film “Morning Light”.

Central Florida-grown superstars

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 5:20 pm
November 28, 2008

When I moved to the Central Florida about 10 years ago, it was being touted as “Hollywood East” (or something similar to that). I’ve been out of the entertainment loop for quite some time now so I don’t know if that still holds true, but I’ve yet to see any really big movies filmed & produced here, or see any huge celebrities migrate to the area.

Why did I bring this up? Well, I was watching television recently and saw an interview with singer/actress Mandy Moore, who hails from one of our ‘hoods. This led me to thinking about some of the other more well-known celebrities to come out of the Orlando/Central Florida area.

Carrot Top

Here’s a collection:

> Carrot Top
> Mandy Moore
> Delta Burke
> *NSYNC
> Wayne Brady
> Cheryl Hines
> Lou Pearlman

I’ve actually seen both Carrot Top and Lou Pearlman out-and-about…separately; they are both gross. Lou, of course, is now locked-away in jail so this “sighting” was a couple of years back. I also used to know exactly where *NSYNCr JC Chasez lived (which I’m sure would’ve been information worth tons of money to many, many girls at the time).

Have you ever had a “celebrity spotting”? Do you have a favorite Central Florida-bred celebrity? If so we’d love to hear about it.

One of those “mixed” days

We all have good days.

Bad days? I’ve certainly had my share.

But then there are those days when we just can’t seem to make up our minds:

Like it raw?

Filed under: Orlando, Orlando Events — admin @ 3:11 pm

Like it raw? Put the brakes on: I’m talking about food here! Well-being enthusiast blogger Julie Kalivretenos recently published a post reviewing and interviewing the owner of the new Café 118° in Winter Park. If you’re a fan of raw, vegan, or vegetarian food you might want to read Julie’s post…and even take a visit to Café 118°. Me, I tend to like my food cooked so I’m not sure you’ll be seeing a review here on “Pulse” anytime soon (unless klynn ends-up doing one). But you never know…I just might get a wild hair one day!
